Expectations were shattered as FC Barcelona faced a disturbing night where every little to big thing went wrong. Luis Enrique’s side lost by 4 goals against Athletic Club Bilbao in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.
Some crucial changes were made in this match, changes most of the fans are disappointed with as the main trio of midfield -- Iniesta, Busquets and Rakitic were left out and replaced by Javier Mascherano, and the inexperienced duo of Rafinha Alcantara and Sergi Roberto. Luis Enrique explained: "I had to make many changes because we had only three days to recover after the UEFA Super Cup. I want to protect my players, it’s not a point of the season where you can play again right after playing 120 minutes a couple of days ago. I rested the players who needed it, and that’s the role I play as the coach. I take responsibility for the loss."
The coach was then asked about if a comeback was possible for his side after this 4-0 defeat, the coach confidently replied: "This was just the first half, we still have another 90 minutes to play. If there's one team that can turn this around, it's Barça. I've never played an easy game against Athletic, they're always tough to go up against. I congratulate them but on Monday at the Camp Nou, there will be a different atmosphere."
