Laporta: The contract with Qatar is a better kept secret than the Coca Cola recipe

The candidate also reaffirms that the Managing Commission is overstepping its duties

During various campaign events, Joan Laporta spoke about many issues relating to his project and the current activity surrounding FC Barcelona

About Paul Pogba, he stated that “Pogba is excited about coming to Barça. I have a great relationship with Mino Raiola. He would be a great signing. Everyone thinks that he would fit in the team’s system. Abidal also has a great relationship with the player. If we were to negotiate his signing, we would first speak to Juventus, depending on what our technical advisors tell us. If this opportunity arises I will ask Luis Enrique for his opinion. The coach has been the architect of this success.”

“Mino Raiola holds the key to this signing. If the socís give us their confidence we will try to sign him,” Laporta added.

Asked what he thinks about the Managing Commission trying to sign the French player before the elections, the former president said: “It would be good news if Pogba signed before the elections, but based on what we know, Juventus will not negotiate before that time. In any case, the Managing Commission is overstepping its mandate. It’s true that we can’t let some market opportunities pass, but there are some decisions that should be made by the new board, not the interim one. The biggest advantage our rivals have over us is not this electoral period but the fact that we can’t incorporate new players during this transfer window.”

He concluded by adding that: “Our technical secretary will decide on the signings,” so that loyalty to Barça’s style is maintained because “Rosell and Bartomeu were fans of overruling” the sporting directors.

The former president also commented that he “consulted Johan Cruyff” about installing Éric Abidal as technical secretary and that Abidal had told him in March that, if he was running, he would be a part of his team. About Demetrio Albertini, he stated that “we’re still talking. I think he’s the right person to help us re-build the bridges we had with UEFA, FIFA, ECA.”

When he was asked to compare Luis Enrique and Pep Guardiola, Laporta stated that, when it comes to style, “Pep surely represents Barça’s essence better. Luis Enrique is more of an unknown, but with him Barça came back to its roots while also adding the counterattack. It’s only fair that he stays on. Last season, with Martino, Barça lost their style.” On a follow-up question about a potential Guardiola return to FC Barcelona, he said: “Pep has a contract with Bayern, time will tell. I would like to have him in the project, but only when he decides. Pep can be whatever he wants to be at Barça. Ideally he would end up as president.”

When talking about the presidents that followed him at Barça’s helm, Laporta said that “the lack of transparency has been evident in their era. The contract with Qatar is a better kept secret than the Coca Cola recipe. I’m sure there are other options. If we win, it would be good to have UNICEF or something similar on the front of the shirt.”

“I won’t play any dirty games, that wouldn’t lead anywhere. I’ve seen Bartomeu lying plenty of times, he always speaks half truths, like with the Neymar Case which got Barça indicted. He’s Rosell’s puppet.”

As for the new documents that have emerged regarding Neymar’s transfer, Laporta just said that it would be “very bad if Barça had to make any additional payments. Things have been done with very little transparency.”

Laporta also explained that Enric Masip has turned into his right-hand man, along with the former vice-president Rafa Yuste, in this electoral team: “For me, it is a privilege that he is accompanying me on this adventure. Because of how much he loves Barça, his knowledge, his experience, for maintaining the values of the sportsperson and having management experience from a private company. And because he’s brave and a team worker.”

He also acknowledged the presence of former Barcelona kit manager Txema Corbella, who was fired last summer after working at the club for 32 years: “The players called him president and if he really wanted to, he could have been president, all the players would have voted for him.”

According to Laporta, “the contract we signed with Uzbekistan has nothing to do with the contract this board has with Qatar. That was a contract for 5 million for playing a friendly and this other one ties Qatar to Barça for a number of years.”

He also assured that he is negotiating for the necessary money guarantees with banks and that “it’s not true that Jorge Mendes and Peter Lim are behind me.”

Laporta also stated that if elected he will withdraw the complaint made in the club's name against his former board because “its only objective was to denigrate people that didn’t deserve it.”
