Bartomeu: “Messi’s renewal is vital for the club’

The club’s president confirms he has talked with Messi’s family about his renewal

The club’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu assured to Catalan TV station TV3 before the match against Las Palmas that “Messi’s contract renewal is vital for the club. I’ve had conversations with Messi’s family and representatives in order for him to continue here. When there is news, I’ll let you know”, Bartomeu said.

There’s a lot of rumors about Messi’s renewal negotiations and Bartomeu tried to clear the air by stressing on the value of the Argentinian footballer: “He’s the best player in the world and the best ever and he’s indisputable in the club’s project. We’ll do whatever it takes [to reach an agreement] because the club and the player are looking for an understanding and this should has a happy ending”. He remarked that “there’s no nervousness at the club, only calmness and people working dutifully. I have been at the club since 2003 when Ronaldinho began this great era which is continuing with Messi”.

When asked about Barça’s absence from the FIFA The Best Awards gala, Bartomeu explained that “there was an important game against Athletic that we had to prepare and FIFA understood the situation. We always put sporting matters first and in the end we were proved right because the tie against them was very tough.”
