Gerard López: ‘Our goal is to develop players’
The Barcelona academy coach has remarked the solid season the B squad is having and the importance of how to win
The Barça B team is going through a great season. The culés are the Group III leaders in the Spanish third division with 35 points and six wins, two draws and only one defeat in the last nine games. The team coach, Gerard López, spoke in the Barça TV studios highlighting that “we are leaders and it’s very positive, but the most important aspect is the formation of the young players.”
“We’re having a good results dynamic but also a good team chemistry. It’s important to win but above all, it’s about how we win. We also need to develop them so they can be ready to back up the senior squad when needed”, López added.
The requirements of his role are very clear to him: “It’s very demanding because you have to put together a squad with players who in a future must be part of the best team in the world, but on the other hand it’s a privilege to be part of this from an early age and have this responsibility. The goal [this season] is promotion [to the second division] but above all is to develop the players for their footballing careers.”
Speaking about the current physical and playing state of the squad, he’s very proud of being “the most offensive team in the category, but every squad is based upon the defense. We haven’t conceded a goal in seven of the last nine games. He said that one of the key aspects is that mix of younger players with more experienced ones: “It’s positive to combine with older football players so that the younger ones can learn, but the essence is the same, we keep the identical methodology”.
López foresees a tough clash in the derby against Espanyol B this Saturday at the Miniestadi: “It will be a complicated match, a very interesting mini derby against a club which also takes great care of its academy. I hope a lot of fans turnout to cheer for us”.
