Rating the players after the 6-2 win vs Betis
Messi excels once again as Suárez scores a hattrick and the new signings impress
Claudio Bravo (5.5): Distributed the ball well but a quiet match overall. Maybe he could’ve done better on Ruben Castro's free kick but it didn’t prove to be costly, same for the second goal. Sad that he couldn’t get a send off with a clean sheet but he has been a great servant for us.
Sergi Roberto (7): Wonderful from start to finish, involved going forward and solid defensively. Started the move and assisted for Messi’s first goal today, picked up another assist when he found Suárez in the box. Wasn’t as involved in the second half, but a strong performance yet again.
Gerard Piqué (6.5): Didn’t have much to do today as Barça dominated from start to finish. He was involved going forward and had a couple of chances after set pieces, especially in the second half, but couldn’t score. Passed the ball well and his partnership with Umtiti looked solid.
Samuel Umtiti (7): He’s hit the ground running, passing has been great, composed on the ball and commanding in the air. His partnership with Piqué has looked better than what it did with Mascherano. He took risks on the ball by pushing forward and won the aerial battles. Impressed in the little time he has played.
Jordi Alba (6.5): Took up a great position and assisted Arda Turan. He should’ve had more assists but regardless of this he has been playing well. His overlapping runs were too much for Betis. Defensively he has been good and not making errors. In the second half, he dropped a bit, but his movement was still decent. Replaced by Digne after 75 mins.
Sergio Busquets (7): Getting better each game. Very involved today and his passing was crisp, including a couple of long passes. Had it easier defensively with Rakitić doing his usual work without the ball. Had a lot of time on the ball, making it easier for him to find his rhythm. Solid performance all around.
Ivan Rakitić (6.5): Strong display, active from the start, both going forward and defensively. Combined well with Messi on the right and Denis in the middle, working tirelessly without the ball. Tried his luck a couple of times with long range shots, but couldn’t get them on target and Adán did well to stop his only shot on target. Nonetheless, a great match by the Croat
Denis Suárez (6.5): For the first goal he smartly left a Messi diagonal cross and the outcome is known. He has looked confident on the ball and made the correct decisions. Him playing in the midfield rather than Arda is a must, today highlighted it as we lost the fluidity when Arda went to the midfield. Subbed off after 69 minutes. His performance was very positive, much like Digne and Umtiti it seems as if he has been here for years. His period of adaptation has been very quick.
Lionel Messi (10): Continued where he left off in the last match and dominated from start to finish. His passing was sublime. Started the move for the first goal with a brilliant pass, scored with a brilliant shot to make it 2-1, recorded an assist for Suárez after a great counter attack in the second half and scored his second of the match right after that. Man of the match.
Luis Suárez (8.5): Got involved from the start, even though his passing wasn’t the best early on. First real chance came after Sergi found him in the box and he finished off brilliantly. second half started with a great counter attack and his second goal of the match. Completed his hat-trick with a marvelous free-kick to make it 6-1. Worked well defensively and pressed all game long.
Arda Turan (7): Well taken goal in the left wing, the position that gets the best out of him, moving well off and on the ball. Though he is misplacing some passes he is making good decisions unlike last season. In the second half, he slowed down but still started the counter attack on the fourth goal and then played Messi in who cut it across the goal to Suárez. For the last 20 minutes, he played in midfield and he did not look comfortable, but his form of late has been impressive.
Lucas Digne: Impressed in the little time he played in. Confident on the ball and made decent runs, not as good as Jordi Alba but they still caused the Betis defence trouble. He was unlucky to not get his first Barcelona goal after being played in by Messi. Looking forward to seeing more of the Frenchman throughout the season.
Munir: Played only twenty minutes, but he showed his form from pre season. Working hard even though the game was long over. He has been performing on the left even though this isn’t his strongest position. He lacks when taking on defenders on from wide but over time this will improve. Hopefully, we will see more of him in the coming weeks.
