Player Ratings - Spanish Cup Quarterfinals - Celta 1:1 Barcelona
Arnaiz scores again as Barcelona's substitutes achieve a great result away from home
Jasper Cillessen (7): Didn’t have too much to do. His passing was decent. On the goal he should’ve done a lot better, can’t be getting beat at his near post from that angle. In the second half, he was called to make more saves and did so comfortable. The goal was the only stain on his performance.
Nélson Semedo (9): Wonderful performance. He started slightly slow but improved a lot. He made a massive last ditch tackle, to deny Aspas a clear goal. Generally, he dealt with Sisto well. Going forward he’s been a threat and one of our brightest players so far. The second half was more of the same. He seems to have got his early season confidence back.
Gerard Piqué (7): Good game. Early on he made a mistake by stepping out of position but Semedo saved him. Other than this, he commanded the defence and dealt with Celta well. Passing was good as we expected. Nothing more to really say, he went and done his job as he does.
Thomas Vermaelen (8): Once again great but sometimes a bit slow to read play. On the ball he’s been good. He dealt with Aspas pretty well. Digne playing below his usual level left him with more to do but he managed to deal with it well. Since returning from injury he’s been very consistent and playing at a very high level.
Lucas Digne (6): Quiet game from the Frenchman, not done anything too special, it has to be said. Didn’t help going forward either but defended alright. His passing was good but he didn’t influence the game too much.
Sergio Busquets (7): Great game for him, his pass to Gomes on the first goal was key. He held our MF together for large parts of the game. He was unlucky on the Celta goal, he read play well and got a good challenge in but still they scored. Almost got on the scoresheet but his shot hit the crossbar. He does his work quietly and it was just another day at the office.
André Gomes (9): One of his best games for Barcelona, a really strong 90 minute performance. Shielded ball well, passed well and made good forward runs which he didn’t do much of when lower on confidence. His assist on the goal was great. He also could have scored from a long range shot and a header but it wasn’t to be. It was a lot like the 14/15 version of him, he looked to be playing with a lot of confidence which we haven’t seen since he has joined the club.
Denis Suárez (5): Not a good game for him. He was overcomplicating play on many occasions rather than doing the simple option. On the ball he looks comfortable but he’s not making too much of it and taking too much touches and time on the ball. Passing been a bit wayard. Not so good in the final third, maybe mistake made due to indecision. Needs to improve real soon as he’s been given some chances and like Deulofeu, is not taking them.
Aleix Vidal (5): Awful. He barely got into the game and made any influence. Moments here and there but it was far and few between. He pressed well but that was about it. He was subbed off with 15 minutes to go for Sergi Roberto.
Paulinho (5): Without Messi he looked lost, he didn’t know what to do with and without the ball. However, he did press well it has to be said although this is expected from him but no use when he’s on the ball. He was slow to make decisions, most notably that through ball on for Arnaiz that he missed. With Messi his performances will improve but playing in this role was new for the Brazilian.
José Arnaiz (8): Played for 70 minutes and was one of the best players on the pitch. In the first half, he was very lively, linking play, bringing others into play. His goal was very well taken, a strikers finish. Bringing people into play and making great runs. Passing been good and not afraid to attack Celta defenders. He had a very easy chance to get another in the second half but he missed the target. His influence started decreasing as the game went on but it was a solid game for him.
Ousmane Dembélé: Finally returned after his bad injury. You could tell he was nervous and reluctant to play his usual game. This was expected, it will take sometime for him to get back to his usual self. It is nice to see him play again after so long.
Sergi Roberto: Had a little cameo but didn’t do too much. By this time both teams were content with a draw it has to be said. He did however have more impact than Aleix on the game but that isn’t saying too much.
Ivan Rakitić: Surprisingly, the little he played, he played at a good level which was a bit odd but if this is a start of him regaining form, I’m all for it. I was quite surprised he was brought on rather than Aleñá.
