The Spanish Super Cup started with its new format back in 1982, celebrating in 2015 its 32nd edition (it wasn't held in 1986 and 1987). The previous version, called Copa Eva Duarte, lasted for 7 years between 1947 and 1953, and in three Barcelona were the crowned champions, while no other team won it more than once. The following facts and records will only take into account the main version referred here as the Spanish Super Cup.

Barcelona are the most successful team in Spanish Super Cup history with 11 titles, winning 35% of the trophies, followed by Real Madrid with nine titles, while no other team won it more than three times. Barcelona takes part in the competition for the 20th time, which is also a record. The first participation by club happened in 1983, winning against Athletic Bilbao. Afterwards Barcelona lost their following three participations, before bouncing back with Cruyff’s dream team, winning the trophy in 1991 and 1992. Between 1997 and 1999, Barcelona became the first (and only) team in the history of the Spanish Super Cup to lose it in three consecutive years. 10 years later, Barcelona achieved an unmatched streak of participating in five consecutive editions (2009-2013), winning four of them.

Barcelona monopolized the competition in recent years, winning six of the previous 10 editions, all of them when they participated as La Liga champions. In fact, the team participating as La Liga champion won the Spanish Super Cup in each of the previous seven years, the last team failing to do so was Real Real Madrid in 2007, losing on 6-3 on aggregate against Copa del Rey champions Sevilla. Statistics wise, the clubs participating as league champions have a clear advantage, winning 66% of the editions played. It’s even better for Barcelona, with 69%.

Xavi Hernández, Valdés, Iniesta, Puyol and Messi were part of Barcelona’s successful history in the Spanish Super Cup, they hold the all-time record of most trophies won in the competition (six). In Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat against Athletic, eight players made their Spanish Super Cup debut for Barcelona: Ter Stegen, Vermaelen, Bartra, Sergi Roberto, Rafinha, Suárez, Rakitic and Sandro. Among the 154 players who represented Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, Guillermo Amor, Guardiola and Xavi played the most games (14), Amor and Xavi being the ones who started the most (13) and Xavi has the most minutes (1162), while Iniesta is the player who featured as a substitute the most (six). Guardiola received the most yellow cards (5), and Stoichkov was the only Barça player to get sent off twice.

29 different players scored for Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup history, Messi with the most goals (10) making him the topscorer of the competition, at Barça he is followed by Stoichkov (six goals) and Begiristain (five). Worth noting that Messi scored five of his 10 goals against Real Madrid, he also scored a brace in the last and only time he faced Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup, and a hattrick against Sevilla back in 2010 making him the last player before Aduriz to score a hattrick in the competition.

After the defeat at the New San Mamés, Barcelona’s chances of winning their 12th Spanish Super Cup have dwindled. Nevertheless with 90 minutes left at the Camp Nou a comeback can't be ruled out. Whatever happens, Barcelona will continue to be the most successful team in the history of the Spanish Super Cup.
