Xavi: La Masia isn't as fertile as it has been over the last decade
Xavi spoke about the academy and possible problems
In a recent interview, Xavi Hernández was asked about his opinion on La Masia not being the same as it was before.
Xavi said: “I believe La Masia will always be the primary source of players for FC Barcelona, although I do admit that the academy might not always be as fertile as it has been over the last decade.”
“La Masia has produced a number of players to come through along with the likes of Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Gerard Piqué and Sergio Busquets – players who formed the core of a senior side that has gone on to dominate Spanish and European football over the last decade.”
He also added: “In recent years we have seen the likes of Rafinha and Munir El Haddadi to feature in the playing XI. But we have seen the likes of Luis Suárez, Neymar and Ivan Rakitic being brought in to the club after paying hefty amounts [for them]. But I'm confident that promoting youth players will always be integral to Barcelona’s identity.”
“Barça is of course a winning team and there will always be new signings that might not come from La Masia, but we will always be fed by La Masia, no doubt.”
