The recurrent controversy is over -for this year- as the Spanish FA (the RFEF) has selected the Vicente Calderón stadium as the venue for the 2017 Spanish Cup final. The match will be played on May 27th between Barcelona and Alavés and will represent the 14th -and last- Spanish Cup final to be hosted on Atlético de Madrid’s home ground.

As inexplicably happens every season, the selection of the stadium for the Spanish Cup final is surrounded by rumors, concert dates and sudden toilets reparations and this year was not the exception. Several options were considered such as the Santiago Bernabéu, San Mamés, La Cartuja and the Benito Villmarín but both teams asked for a neutral ground with the biggest capacity possible and the Calderón arose as the solomonic choice.

There still some details left to clarify such as the numbers of tickets each team will receive but last year’s final serves as a good estimate of what to expect. In the 2016 final between Sevilla and Barça, the Catalan club got 19,301 tickets to the Calderón yet only 13,135 tickets were sold to the members after Barcelona fulfilled with the different institutional commitments, so the total number for this season should be around the 20,000 tickets.

In last year’s final, Barça beat Sevilla 2-0 in extra time with goals from Alba and Neymar and the Blaugranas clinched the 2014/15 La Liga title at the Calderón as well, therefore Atlético’s home ground brings back great memories for the Culés, as remarked by Luis Enrique: “It’s a historic field which will be able to host two great group of supporters and I have fond memories from last season’s final”, said the Asturian coach.

So here’s hoping history repeat itself on the last official match at the Vicente Calderón.
