Barcelona renews with Qatar for another year

The club accepted to keep the sponsorship on the shirt for the same deal as before

FC Barcelona and Qatar Airways have announced the extension of their deal for another season, until June 30th 2017, “under the same conditions as their current deal.” Meaning the Qatari airline will pay around €35 million and will also keep its name on the training shirt.

In June 2015, in his last press conference before resigning to stand for elections, Josep Maria Bartomeu announced that the economic vice-president at the time, Javier Faus, had reached a deal to extend the club’s deal with Qatar Airways for another 4 seasons for a price of €60 million/season.

That extension was going to be signed or not by the incoming president and board, but that never happened. During the campaign Bartomeu announced that it was also negotiating with other companies for the shirt sponsorship and faced a lot of criticism from the other candidates regarding the club’s relationship with the Gulf state.

After they won the elections, the new board wanted to improve the €60 million contract, they re-opened the negotiations, but the deal stalled and the relationship never got back to the point it had been before Faus resigned.

Faced with various financial issues right now, the club needed to sign a sponsorship for the shirt for next season as soon as possible and the airline took advantage of this new situation. So FC Barcelona and Qatar Airways now extend a deal about which the blaugrana club has previously said that it was outdated in the current market and in regards to the club’s sporting success.
