Rating the Barcelona players after the defeat vs Alavés
A day to forget without a single player performing well
Jasper Cillessen (4): Not troubled in the first half and his distribution was fine. There was nothing he could do on the first goal. Maybe he could’ve gotten down quicker on the second goal, but the defending in the buildup to the goal was dreadful. Not much else to do as Alavés sat back after scoring each goal.
Aleix Vidal (3): Poor, just like the rest of the team. Careless on the ball and it didn’t seem like the understanding between him, Rakitić and Arda down the right side was good. Lackluster in the final third and decision-making wasn’t the best. Had a chance to score but Alavés’ keeper did well.
Javier Mascherano (3): One of the worst individuals in what was a bad performance from Barça. His partnership with Mathieu didn’t look convincing and should’ve done much better on both goals. Alavés were quick to punish his mistakes.
Jeremy Mathieu (4.5): Comfortable on the ball, but seemed to dive into tackles unnecessarily and still rusty after recovering. Got the equalizer but then missed an even easier chance which could’ve changed the final outcome of the game, caught out of position a few times by the counterattack but we didn’t pay for it luckily.
Lucas Digne (5): Solid on the ball, in the final third he wasn’t the best, didn’t make the best of the positions he took up and didn’t convince defensively as he had in the past. Late on, he almost assisted Messi for Barcelona’s second but it was put just wide.
Sergio Busquets (4): Much like the majority of the start of the season, looked out of shape today. Badly needs rest. Passing was fine as usual, but he struggled defensively as Alavés players were often running past him and he wasn’t up for it.
Ivan Rakitić (4.5): A game to forget for the Croatian international, seemed like he wasn’t on the same wavelength as Arda and Vidal on the right side and he could never really get going. Worked well defensively as he usually does, but couldn’t make the difference against the opposition that was sitting deep. Had a good chance to score but his shot went wide.
Denis Suarez (3): Poor in the first half, let the ball roll out stupidly for an Alavés throw in which then led to their goal. Not able to express himself much since Alavés did well to limit the space. Subbed off for Messi after 60 minutes. A performance to forget for the young Galician midfielder.
Arda Turan (4.5): Often tried to make something happen in the first half and he looked up for the challenge, but the end product was poor. Didn’t really look good on the right wing, passing was fine, but his crosses didn’t find anyone in the box and couldn’t make the difference down the right wing with Vidal. Subbed off for Iniesta later on.
Paco Alcácer (4.5): Not the best debut, often isolated up front as Barça struggled throughout the match. Paco worked well without the ball and his only shot on goal came in the second half after one of the crosses found him in the box. Subbed off for Suárez later on.
Neymar (4.5): Should have scored a minute after Alavés did. A lot of time on the ball but not that effective due to the packed center. When he got on the ball he dribbled away from goal making it easy to defend against.
Andres Iniesta (5): Subbed on in the 64th minute. His presence in the midfield helped us take up better positions but still we were unable to break down the Alavés defense, put the ball in the back of the net but the play was stupidly called back for a foul even though the advantage should've been given. Andres back on pitch after injury is possibly the only positive from the game.
Lionel Messi: Subbed on in the second half to try and make something happen for Barça, but it was obvious he wasn’t 100 percent coming into this match. Not as dangerous as usual even with his free kicks and the same for his passing. Still had a great chance to score the equalizer in the last moment of the match, but went just wide.
Luis Suárez: Subbed on in the 66th minute, but couldn't change the outcome. Much like Paco in the first half, he often looked isolated as Alavés defended deep. Worked without the ball but didn't even shoot.
